Astrolog for OS/2

Astrolog for OS/2 is a free astrology calculation, charting and analysis software based on the famous Astrolog program by Walter D. Pullen. To learn more have a look at the readme file, or view this screenshot showing the chart of current US President George W. Bush (Tropical points, Synchronized houses, Lahiri ayanamsa).

Project Future

Astrology seems destined to lead all other branches of knowledge out of the blind alley of unspiritual rationalism and materialism. – Dr. Cunibert Mohlberg, Vatican Institute of Archaeology

Astrolog for OS/2 will see continued development and was updated as late as July 2008. Work on its cross-platform replacement has been delayed due to a lack of funding. If you want to see the new software sooner rather than later make a donation of any size and indicate your preferred platform(s).

Version 2.0 Pre-Alpha
Soon to be Released

Thanks to significant changes that the previous 1.2 version is not compatible with I have decided to bump the major version number for the next release. Some of the changes and new features in version 2.0 are as follow.

  • Basic Chart Analysis: Sankhya Yoga (a classic metric), and an experimental Integrity Score synthesizing the following location-independent factors: essential dignity, planetary sovreignty, cuspal placement (within 1° or possibly up to 1/12 of a sign away from a cusp), combustion (within 15° of the Sun – retrogradation is also a factor here), brightness (full moon can have dignity, etc.), and dispositor feedback (weak dispositor renders planet weak as well). In the first Alpha the implementation will be overhauled to track individual planets and not just estimate an overall score. This will result in more generally useful scores. Still, the pre-alpha (using 7 planets plus the Moon’s Nodes) manages to give Hitler a 6, and Shirley MacLaine an impressive 66. Most charts score somewhere between these two, but the extreme bottom is occupied by Jennifer Jason Leigh and a pastor from Texas convicted of raping members of his congregation. Their scores come out as 0 and 1 respectively. Also, a British man married to the same woman for 80 years until he died at an age of 105 scores 67 – that is of course integrity in the extreme, but nonetheless always something to aim for...
  • Extended Chart Information: Time with seconds (in the original version animation could step a chart a second at a time, but the seconds were neither displayed nor saved on file), Time Precision (birth records in some places frequently have the time rounded to the nearest hour), Tags (can associate a chart with multiple categories), Event Type (birth, marriage and death will be predefined), Long Name (somewhat generic, but will probably be birth name for birth events), Accuracy (rodden-based ratings for information accuracy: AA, A, B, C, D, X and XX), Source (gives optional details about the original known source of the information such as the name of a biography), Notes (whatever notes you may want to keep). Event type, tags, accuracy and time precision will be future chart selection criteria.
  • Quick Data Entry: A new chart information dialog with a Parse button makes it a lot easier to copy and paste information from the web, email or other sources. In practice this both speeds up data entry and can also avoid some typing and selection errors. You will be able to enter name, date, time, time zone, place, latitude and longitude all in one place.
  • Localization: As a first major step towards full localization dates and times will be localized. This means that the program loads date and time formats as defined in the currently configured locale object, which can be found in the System Setup folder. The program will accept input as all-numeric, as well as with the month spelled out in full or abbreviated.

The pre-alpha will be finished and released regardless of funding, However, continued development is in dire straits and progress towards 2.0 Final can be very fast or very slow depending on your support. With no financial support I will be forced to devote so much of my time elsewhere that any further development will be held up indefinitely. If anyone would like to continue development, provide a decent vegetarian meal once in a while, offer high-quality web hosting, or in any other way help keep this project fly, please contact me.

Today 12 July 2008 an early preview of version 2.0 (TP10) has been released. This release is not intended for general use, but solely for technical review of the new extended file format, the new chart information dialog, localization of dates and times, as well as an early version of the integrity score. The package contains the executable file along with an updated help file, but no ephemeris files. There are plenty of known bugs and implementation holes in this preview. If you are not in a hurry you may want to at least wait for the first pre-alpha.

I hope to have version 2.0 ready for general use in the first half of 2010. Before then there will likely be multiple prereleases starting with a pre-alpha this October and a first alpha on 10 April 2009. Next in line are a couple of more technical preview releases. Since the current release (TP10) is pretty stable I will now focus on improving its main features.

Groundbreaking New Astrology Software

To replace Astrolog for OS/2 is a completely new professional grade software. It will stand apart from the rest in the following ways.

  • Instead of costing hundreds of dollars it will be available for free.
  • It will have astrological features that make sense and actually work in practice!
  • Both astrologers and people looking for brief but completely objective answers should find the software simple to use.

Depending on funding the software will be available on two or more of the following operating systems: MS Windows (XP/Vista), Mac OS X, Linux and OS/2.

By sponsoring or making even a small donation to this project you can make sure the software will be available for your particular platform and operating system!

Project Funding

I have chosen the pay-for-development model for this software for three reasons: 1) For maximum reach the software has to be free-to-use, 2) I do not have the funds to develop this software including the latest technologies without your support, and 3) to give you a fair opportunity to share in the joy and success of a truly divine piece of software.

For supporters this means you pay only once and can use any number of copies of the software without restrictions. It also means that you only have to pay according to your means and interest in the software and may get away with paying less than those hundreds of dollars asked for by the big names in commercial astrology software, or you can be as generous as you like and get well-deserved credit for being one of those foresighted people who brought not only yourself but the whole world some really groundbreaking astrology software.

All donations give full access to all advance project updates. You can make a secure payment through PayPal using a credit card or your own PayPal account (you will not need to sign up for one). In the field for Optional Instructions be sure to indicate your preferred operating system.
